A Lover’s Fable

He floats suspended
In that place where
Reality seems like
Dreams and dreams

Create a new reality.
In that place between
Wakeful and sleep
Between conscious

And confused.
A seesaw suspended
Between up and down
With no ground.

It’s where he hears her
Inner voice softly ask:
“What do you see?”
“What do you know?”

“What do you want?”
Slowly he enters the space
Where questions reside.
They loom large and

Fly from all directions.
He hears them as they
Pass like high-flying
Birds of prey. As

Stars fall from the sky
He hears yet again:
What do you see?
“I see a blank canvas.

Nothing written. No history.
No pain. No joy. No memory.
No expectation. Just excitement
Over meeting someone

For the first time
Holding her hand
Kissing her lips
Feeling her touch.”

What do you know?
“I know nothing except how
To live and savor each moment.
Each one unique, not comparable

To any that went before.”
What do you want?
“I want to live each day without
Fear or regret or expectation

Beyond the simple desire to
Embrace all that I see as if
For the first time, each time.”
The voice whispers:

“So how does this dream turn out?”
He takes her Inner voice
Into his arms and carries it
Aloft. From a great distance

He points to two people
Holding hands, obviously
Enamored, involved and
Interested in each other.

“That’s you and me.
And that’s all that matters
From this moment until
It doesn’t matter any more.”

Confused, her voice says
“I don’t understand.”
Smiling he says: “It turns out
The way it is supposed to.”

Waking slowly, he finds her
Asleep across a sea of pillows.
Shaping himself to her back
He softly whispers in her ear

As he had every morning
Since they first met:
“I love you today as
I loved you yesterday.”
